DECODING DIVINE MYSTERIES THROUGH PRAYING IN TONGUES

Understanding How to Access Our Inheritances in God

Listen To Podcast: Decoding Divine Mysteries Through Praying In Tongues

Before we go into the very depth of what the Lord would be sharing with us, I want us to start by raising this fundamental question: What does it mean to pray in tongues? I know quite a lot of believers have some idea already of what it means to pray in tongues, but for the sake of those who don’t know yet, I would want us to begin from here. So, What does It Mean to pray in tongues?

To pray in tongues simply means to communicate with God in the place of prayer through such utterances or words that is supplied by the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:4 tells us: “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”  My emphasis in this passage is on the latter part which says “as the Spirit gave them utterance.” What does that tell us? It means that the Holy Spirit can actually supply words to us in the place of prayer. Apostle Paul boasted that He would rather pray in tongues and also pray in understanding.

“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful” (1 Corinthians 14:14).Why did he say here that his understanding is unfruitful? Because he is praying to God in a tongue that is completely outside of his usual tongue. So, he himself does not even know what he is talking about. Now, the beautiful thing about this is that the prayer is between you and God; that is, your personal prayer. 1 Corinthians 14:2 says: “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.” But Apostle Paul himself concluded this way: “What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding” (1 Corinthians 14:14-15).

The question then is: HOW DO YOU PRAY TO GOD USING THE RIGHT WORDS IN UNDERSTANDING? It is through such words that the Holy Spirit supplies. So, the Holy Spirit can give you utterance to pray to God in a known language and even in an unknown language. Zechariah 12:10a also tells us, it says: “And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication.” Did you see that? When the Spirit of grace comes upon you, it comes with the ability to pray (supplicate).

In another meaning, when we pray in tongues, what we do is that we allow the Holy Spirit to pray through us or intercedes through us. Romans 8:26-27 tells us: “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with “groaning” which cannot be uttered.  Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” Two things you would notice from those passages. Number one, it is the Holy Spirit that makes the groaning and not the believer.

To GROAN simply means “to utter a deep moan indicative of pain, grief, or annoyance.” In John 11:33, the Bible says “Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.” Why did Jesus groan in the Spirit? Because He felt the pain of those who were weeping at the tomb of Lazarus.

So what it means in a simple explanation is that the Holy Spirit carries the pain, the grief or the annoyance that you feel in the place of prayer before God. The Holy Spirit lifts the burden of prayer from off you and makes the intercession on your behalf, and this leads us to point number two; it is the Holy Spirit that makes the intercession. What do you then do as a believer? You simply allow The Holy Spirit to do the praying by releasing yourself and surrendering yourself to His operations. The passion translation gives us a more rounded explanation of this and I want us to read it.

“And in a similar way, the Holy Spirit takes hold of us in our human frailty to empower us in our weakness. For example, at times we don’t even know how to pray, or know the best things to ask for. But the Holy Spirit rises up within us to super-intercede on our behalf, pleading to God with emotional sighs too deep for words. 27 God, the searcher of the heart, knows fully our longings, yet he also understands the desires of the Spirit, because the Holy Spirit passionately pleads before God for us, his holy ones, in perfect harmony with God’s plan and our destiny.”

Romans 8:26-27 (TPT)

Why Am I Not Praying In Tongues?

A lot of people claim to have been born again for many years and still, they aren’t able to pray in tongues. I remember it took me a whopping six years between the time I gave my life to Christ and the time I started speaking in tongues. Now, if you claim to have been born again and yet you aren’t praying in tongues yet, it could be because of the following reasons:

1. Lack of Understanding of the operations of the Holy Spirit and what speaking in tongues really entails. You know, a lot of people would say “I don’t really understand what I am saying, and that is why I haven’t been able to pray in other tongues.” Well, the truth is, you don’t need to understand what you are saying, because the Bible says “you are speaking mysteries to God” 1 Corinthians 14:2, 14). All you need to do is to yield yourself to the workings of the Holy Spirit in you and He would supply the utterance.

2. Lack of Hunger for praying in tongues (John 7:37, Matthew 5:6). The Holy Spirit would not force on you what you don’t desire or hunger for. When He sees the sincerity of your heart that you truly want to pray in tongues, then He would supply you the necessary utterance.

3. When you don’t believe (John 7:38). Also, it is of utmost importance that you believe in the workings of the Holy Spirit if you want to pray in other tongues.

4. Denominationalism is another factor that is hindering people from praying in other tongues. I have been privileged to meet with people, who because of their denomination and the church they are affiliated to, have hindered them from praying in other tongues. Some churched do not believe that speaking in tongues is for every believer, some believe it is for a select few and this idea have greatly been sold out to their congregants who in turn did not see any need for it.

Advantages of Praying In Tongues

1) Praying in tongues builds up your Faith

We all know that praying in tongues builds up our faith according to Jude 1:20 which say: “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.” But the question is this: HOW DOES PRAYING IN TONGUES DO JUST THAT? Let me show us! The Bible tells us that faith comes to us by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17). That tells you that the word of God is the raw material of your faith. But when you acquire a raw material, you don’t consume it in that state, isn’t it? That raw material that you have acquired must be further processed in order to give you the finished product.

So, what happens is that when you pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit brings together every word of God that He can lay hold upon in your spirit that addresses your situation, and then He brings them together to form the finished products of your desires, that is, what you are praying for. This is why you don’t pray alone in isolation, you must endeavor that you are first equipped with the word of God. In Acts 20:32, apostle Paul said something and I want you to notice the sequence of what he said. It says: “So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”

2) Praying In Tongues Opens Us Up Into a Realm of Endless Possibilities

The realm of endless possibilities is that realm where nothing is impossible. The realm of endless possibilities is the realm where God Almighty Himself dwells. Bible says in Luke 1:37 “For with God nothing will be impossible.” When we pray in tongues that is the realm the Holy Spirit takes us to. 1 Corinthians 14:2 says: “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.”

3) Praying in Tongues Opens Us Up To an Endless Flow of the Spirit

The Holy Spirit is meant to continuously flow in us and through us. This is why the apostle Paul admonished in Ephesians (5:18) that we should not be drunk with wine but to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Also, in John 7:37-39, the Bible says:On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”

There is no other way to be opened up to this flow of the Holy Spirit other than praying in the language that He alone supplies.

Uncovering Divine Mysteries through Praying in Tongues

“This is why the Scriptures say:

Things never discovered or heard of before,
things beyond our ability to imagine—
these are the many things God has in store
for all his lovers.

10 But God now unveils these profound realities to us by the Spirit. Yes, he has revealed to us his inmost heart and deepest mysteries through the Holy Spirit, who constantly explores all things.”

1 Corinthians 2:9-12 (TPT)

Now, verse 9 alone reveals to us that God has prepared some things for those who love Him. So, if you are a child of God, the question is not whether God has you in mind or not. What you should be after is you trying to lay hold on those things that God has prepared for you from the foundations of the world. The prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) walked up to his father with all the strength and confidence he could muster to demand from his father his own portion of the inheritance. Why? Because he sure knew, like he knows his own name, that his father has something in stock for him.

God is a Father, and so, a true and sincere father leaves inheritances for his children and his children’s children (Proverbs 13:22). Jesus said something profound about this in Matthew 7:7-11 and I want us to read that portion of the Bible. It says: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”

Did we see that? So that passage above settles the question: DOES GOD HAVE ANYTHING IN STOCK FOR ME? God sure has something for every of His children. He is not a wicked Father who is not thinking or planning about the future of His children. In Jeremiah 29:11-12, He says “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.” In Ephesians 1:3, He says: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.”

Now, verse 10 shows us something profound. It says: “But God now unveils these profound realities to us by the Spirit. Yes, he has revealed to us his inmost heart and deepest mysteries through the Holy Spirit, who constantly explores all things.” Just as we were told some weeks ago by the vessel of utterance during our Leadership Fellowship that the things of God are not on the surface, they are locked deep down in our spirit and it is our responsibility to search it out. Proverbs 20:5 tells us that “Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.” Everything that God has blessed us with is in the realm of the Spirit, and it takes praying in other tongues to be able to uncover them.

So, praying in tongues brings us to that place where we are able to access those divine mysteries of God.

I believe you have been blessed!

Word of Confession: (Optional)

Lord Jesus, I confess to you that I have sinned against the LORD God - in the rebellion of my heart, I have disappointed your expectations on my life. I have fallen from Your grace and followed wrong influences around me. Today, I retrace my steps back to you - and I ask that in your mercy you accept me as your son and give to me (again) the promise of the Father - the Holy Spirit. Lord Jesus, please, come and make my heart your home, and from there rule in the affairs of all men. In Jesus Name I have prayed.

True spirituality is not in giving alms with the right hand and the left is aware, It is not by standing on the roof top to pray, It is not in wearing a long robe to look sanctimonious. True spirituality is the posture of your heart towards SIN, towards GOD, and towards your NEIGHBOUR.
