HEALTHY BIBLICAL EXERCISES FOR A HEALTHY SPIRITUAL GROWTH

Listen To Podcast: Healthy Biblical Exercises for A Healthy Spiritual Growth

An exercise is something that is done or performed repeatedly or practiced in order to develop, improve, or display a specific capability or skill. There are a few spiritual exercises that the Scriptures admonished us to engage in and I will be showing us a couple of them in this piece.

Exercise To Godliness [1 Timothy 4:7-9]

“But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance.”

What is godliness? Godliness is reverence for God and living a life of holiness in this present world. It also means maintaining a practical awareness of God in every aspect of life. Godliness also emphasizes releasing oneself to wholesome commandments of God and living based on the precepts of God.

Exercise unto godliness is a deliberate spiritual effort where one yields his or her spirit unto God rather than to something that is ungodly. If for example, you are caught in a web where you have the opportunity to do the will of God and also the will of the devil, you choosing to do the will of God against all odds is simply an exercise unto godliness. In Psalms 1:1-2, the Scripture showed us what it means to exercise oneself unto godliness. The Bible says:

Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.

Proverbs 1:10-16 Says:

My son, if sinners entice you,
Do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us,
Let us lie in wait to shed blood;
Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;
12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol,
And whole, like those who go down to the Pit;
13 We shall find all kinds of precious possessions,
We shall fill our houses with spoil;
14 Cast in your lot among us,
Let us all have one purse”—
15 My son, do not walk in the way with them,
Keep your foot from their path;
16 For their feet run to evil,
And they make haste to shed blood.

1 Timothy 6:3-6

“If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, 4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, 5 useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself. 6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

In these verses above, Paul said:

  • There is a doctrine that leads to godliness, that we must follow.
  • Anyone who teaches anything which does not lead to godliness, one should be wary of such persons and such teachings.
  • Whether godliness is profitable or not, we must exercise ourselves to it.

Titus 2:11-14

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.”

Exercise self-control [1 Corinthians 7:6-9]

“But I say this as a concession, not as a commandment. 7 For I wish that all men were even as I myself. But each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that. 8 But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am; 9 but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.”

To exercise self-control simply means to bring one’s body under, to not allow or permit the indulgence or gratifications of the flesh. Exercising self-control is one of the biggest challenges that many believers are facing today. If we do not need to exercise self-control, the Scripture isn’t going to document it for our admonition.

No matter how highly spiritual you are or mighty in the things of God, your inability to exercise self-restraints when it matters can ruin one’s life and purpose in God. Samson was a mighty man of God but his inability to exercise self-control led to his early exit from doing valiantly for God. One of the biggest problems of David’s life on the throne came as a result of not exercising self-control as well.

Galatians 5:22-23

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”

Exercise your Faith (Little faith, Weak faith, Strong faith)

There are three categories of faith the Bible made reference to. There is little faith, there is weak faith and there is strong or great faith. The degree to which we exercise our faith, will determine whether our faith will be little, weak, or strong. What determines how far our faith can produce for us is usually dependent on how we give ourselves to exercising that faith.

LITTLE FAITH [Matthew 8:23-26]

What gives birth to little faith is simply a product of fear. As a matter of fact, when we are afraid, it simply shows that we don’t even have faith at all because faith and fear are not supposed to co-exist.

Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. 25 Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” 26 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

WEAK FAITH

The primary reason why believers are weak in faith is simply because they are not doing something about the word that they have received, not acting on the word. It is either you are acting on the word as a believer or you are not acting on the word. Romans 4:17-19 says:

(as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; 18 who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, “So shall your descendants be.” 19 And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.

Abraham was not weak in faith because he was simply acting on the word of God concerning his situation.

STRONG FAITH

Acting on the word of God is what produces strong faith. Romans 4:20-22 says: “He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. 22 And therefore “it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Like I do say over and over again, acting on the word of God begins from acting on seemingly little things. If you can release your faith for little things and it works, then your faith would grow to the point where you can release it for something big, and it would respond to you. David’s faith was able to kill a lion and a bear, and so, when it was time to kill Goliath, that faith was there to do the impossible.

Exercise Yourself Towards Good Conscience [Acts 24:16 KJV]

“And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void to offence toward God, and toward men.”

A good conscience is a conscience that does not condemn you toward God or toward men.

HOW TO MAINTAIN A GOOD CONSCIENCE

#1. MAINTAIN A GOOD CONDUCT ALL THE TIME IN CHRIST JESUS

Don’t be a man or a woman who is good today and tomorrow is bad. Let your conduct be good at every point in time. 1 Peter 3:15-16 says: “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 16 having a good conscience, that when they defame (insult, denigrate) you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed.”

#2. LET YOUR ACTIONS BE A PRODUCT OF FAITH

The Bible made it clear that whatever that is not of faith is a sin. To maintain a good conscience, let your all that you do be a product of faith. 1 Timothy 3:8-9 says: “Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.”

#3. ALWAYS GIVE ROOM FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT TO PURIFY YOUR MIND

Don’t allow the things of this world to contaminate your mind. Always allow the Holy Spirit to do the work of purifying your mind so that it can produce good conscience always. When your mind is purified, your conscience will also be purified. Titus 1:15-16 says: “To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.”

May the Lord help us to maintain a good conscience always in the Holy Spirit.

Word of Confession: (Optional)

Lord Jesus, I confess to you that I have sinned against the LORD God - in the rebellion of my heart, I have disappointed your expectations on my life. I have fallen from Your grace and followed wrong influences around me. Today, I retrace my steps back to you - and I ask that in your mercy you accept me as your son and give to me (again) the promise of the Father - the Holy Spirit. Lord Jesus, please, come and make my heart your home, and from there rule in the affairs of all men. In Jesus Name I have prayed.
