RECEIVING DIVINE GUIDANCE FOR PURPOSE AND DESTINY FULFILMENT

Understanding 5 Things that Facilitates Divine Guidance on the Journey of Purpose

Listen To Podcast: Receiving Divine Guidance for Purpose & Destiny Fulfillment

The way God leads people in the Old Testament is different from the way God leads us in the New Testament. If you read Hebrews 1:1-2, the Bible says: “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets…” Here we see that God led the people in the Old Testament through the prophets. Who are prophets? Prophets are God’s mouth piece. You can call them the mediator between God and the people in the old covenant. They receive the counsel of God; they reveal it to the people and they also document it for posterity’s sake. If there is anything God wanted the people to do, He reveals them to the prophet. If there is a place God wants His people to go, He simply reveals it to His prophets.

In Deuteronomy 18:15 and 18, the Bible says: “The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear, I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.” So, the opportunity of being led by God at the time was through the prophets that God Himself had raised up for the people. Receiving divine guidance for the sake of executing the purpose of God collectively came via the instructions of God through the prophets. Also, in Hosea 12:13, the Bible says: By a prophet the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, and by a prophet he was preserved.” So, divine guidance in the Old Testament comes via the leadership of the prophets.

But in the New Testament, the arrangement is different. Verse 2 of Hebrews 1 says: “has in these last days [talking about this present day and time] spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds…” How does God lead us in this dispensation? Through His Son? How does the Son lead us, knowing that He is not physically present with us again on earth? Romans 8:14 shows us. It says: “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” So, when we talk about divine guidance for purpose and destiny fulfilment, it comes by the leadership of the Holy Spirit.

Now, somebody may be thinking, does it mean the prophets are no longer important in this new dispensation? The answer is no. They are still important. When Christ ascended, the Bible says He gave gifts to men: apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers (Ephesians 4). But they do not take the primary leadership role as we saw them in the Old Testament. They simply confirm the word of the Lord to you or act as a witness of what God is saying to you by His Spirit or the direction you must take.

Bible passages:

And as we stayed many days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 11 When he had come to us, he took Paul’s belt, bound his own hands and feet, and said, “Thus says the Holy Spirit, ‘So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’” 12 Now when we heard these things, both we and those from that place pleaded with him not to go up to Jerusalem. 13 Then Paul answered, “What do you mean by weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” 14 So when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, “The will of the Lord be done.” 15 And after those days we packed and went up to Jerusalem.”

Acts 21:10-15

But Paul was not moved by Agabus’ revelation because he already knew by revelation that he was supposed to go to Jerusalem. If you read Galatians 2:1-2a, Paul said: Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and also took Titus with me. 2 And I went up by revelation…” So, the ministry of the prophets in the New Testament is not to take the primary role of leadership or leading the people of God as we saw in the Old Testatment, they are there to confirm the word of God to you or what the Holy Spirit must have earlier revealed to you.

What Is Divine Guidance?

Divine Guidance simply means God showing you the way to go towards the fulfillment of your purpose and destiny, and the steps to take on that same way. It is one thing to know the way to go, and not knowing the steps to take. It is another thing to know the steps to take but not knowing the specific way to take those steps. But divine guidance helps you to know both, the way to go and the steps to take on that way. David said in Psalms 23:3: “He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” That tells us that there is a path of unrighteousness. The path of unrighteousness does not necessarily mean that you are sinning. Any path that you take that does not lead you towards the fulfilment of your purpose and destiny in life is a path of unrighteousness.

Why Do we Need Divine Guidance for Purpose and Destiny Fulfilment?

WE NEED DIVINE GUIDANCE SIMPLY BECAUSE GOD KNOWS BETTER THAN WE DO! No matter how much we think we know, God still knows much more than we know. So, when God is leading us and guiding us, He is doing that in His capacity as Omniscient, He knows all things. See what the Bible says in Exodus 13:17-18. It says:

“Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out of the land of Egypt.”

God knows the best for us and He leads and guides us per time based on what He knows is good for us and not what we think is good for ourselves.

See what the Bible says in Jeremiah 10:23 so that it can help our understanding in this regard. The Bible says: “O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.” Did we see that? When it comes to fulfilling the purpose of God, the best of our knowledge or understanding cannot aid us. We need God to guide us. If you read that verse in the Amplified version, see what it says: O LORD, I know that the path of [life of] a man is not in himself; it is not within [the limited ability of] man [even one at his best] to choose and direct his steps [in life].

In Psalm 32:8-9, the Bible says:

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will guide you with My eye.
9 Do not be like the horse or like the mule,
Which have no understanding,
Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle,
Else they will not come near you.

Most of the times, God calls us to follow Him not even knowing where He is taking us to. Sometimes we have the inclinations of where He is taking us to, but we don’t even know how we will get there. This was the case with the likes of Abraham and co. They knew God had called them out to somewhere, but they don’t even know where and how to get there. They only followed His guidance per time, every step of the way. In Genesis 12:1, the Bible says: Now the LORD had said to Abram: “Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you.”

Hebrews 11:8-10 also says:

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; 10 for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”

So, it takes divine guidance for us to be able to fulfill our purpose and arrive at the destination that God is taking us into.

How to Receive Divine Guidance Towards Purpose and Destiny Fulfillment

#1. PRAYER

In order to enjoy divine guidance towards purpose and destiny fulfillment, we have to be a man or woman that is given to prayer. Prayer is not something we do once in a while, prayer is what we do all the time in order to receive divine guidance to fulfill His purpose. Jesus teaching His disciples in Matthew 6:6 saying “when you pray...” Notice He didn’t say “If you pray” meaning that there must be a time of prayer.

#2. THE WORD OF GOD [Psalm 119:105]

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

God leads us b speaking to us through our recreated human spirit. God also leads us by His word. David said in the same Psalm 119:1: “your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you.” So, we receive divine guidance through the word of God, we know what to do per time and when to do them. We know which steps to take and which steps not to take.

#3. KNOWLEDGE AND DISCERNMENT [Philippians 1:9-11]

“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”

Discernment talks about the ability to know between what is good and what is not good, the way to go and the way not to go. And there is no way discernment can take place if you don’t first and foremost arm yourself with knowledge. So, if you would receive divine guidance towards the fulfilment of your purpose and destiny, you must go for knowledge.

#4. ABSOLUTE SURRENDER TO GOD

If You want divine guidance, you must absolutely surrender to God. Part of surrendering to God is that you lay aside your own beautiful plans and yield yourself to His own plan. This can only take place in the place of surrendering. Psalm 33:10-11 says:

The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect.
11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
The plans of His heart to all generations.

Since the counsel of God stands forever, it is only wisdom that one surrender oneself to it.

#5. FAITH IN THE PROCESS

We must have faith in the process that God would be taking us through. There is no man or woman that ever fulfilled the will of God that God does not take through a process. Whether you would arrive at the destination of God would be dependent on you having faith in the process that God is leading you through. In 2 Kings 3:17, the Bible says: For thus says the Lord: ‘You shall not see wind, nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, so that you, your cattle, and your animals may drink.’”

I pray that the Lord would help us in Jesus’ name! God is willing to guide us by His Spirit if we will be willing to follow His leadership.

Word of Confession: (Optional)

Lord Jesus, I confess to you that I have sinned against the LORD God - in the rebellion of my heart, I have disappointed your expectations on my life. I have fallen from Your grace and followed wrong influences around me. Today, I retrace my steps back to you - and I ask that in your mercy you accept me as your son and give to me (again) the promise of the Father - the Holy Spirit. Lord Jesus, please, come and make my heart your home, and from there rule in the affairs of all men. In Jesus Name I have prayed.
