THE TWO CARDINAL POINTS IN ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP

Discover the Need for Culture and Structure in Your Organization

Listen To Podcast: The Two Cardinal Points In Organizational Leadership

I want to share with us in this article on something that has been titled: The Two Cardinal Points in Organizational Leadership. Now, there are two major points upon which effective organizational leadership rests. The first point is what is called Organizational Culture. And the second point is what is called Organizational Structure. Now, in order to build an effective and thriving organization, these two points must be adequately taken care of, you must pay attention to them as a leader. Let us examine them one after the other in order to see what they actually entail. Let's start by looking at organizational culture.

The very first understanding we must have when it comes to organizational culture is that organization culture is what preserves the life of the organization. If you see or study one or two or more organizations that have been around for a long time, one thing that you would notice as a common denominator for such longevity is a thriving organizational culture. Now, we must understand this as leaders that no organization would perform at its optimal level if there is no culture that drives that optimal performance. The culture that we're talking about in this context has to do with something everyone can see something, that is visible within the organization, that points towards performance.

Now, this culture is what the organization for example, is known for, to the degree that even a first timer or an outsider can see and then act in line with what they see. So, this is what an organizational culture tends to achieve. Everyone can see it, everyone can relate with it, even a first timer, who is just coming into the organization can see that culture in place and then he or she also we align. I've realized that one of the many problems of ineffective organizations is what I termed “a culture of anyhow-ness” or “a culture of anything goes.” When this is the norm in your organization, then something fundamentally is wrong with the way and manner your organization is being run.

There is a story I want to share with us. If you read the book of Jeremiah chapter 35, it is going to corroborate this organizational culture that I just spoke about. If you read Jeremiah, chapter 35, beginning from verse one, the Bible says: The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, 2 “Go to the house of the Rechabites, speak to them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.” So, in the light of what we are discussing with ourselves today, I want us to see the house of Rechabites mentioned in that place as the organization on the focus. So, the word of the Lord came to the Prophet to deliver a message to that organization called the House of Rechabites.

If you read from verse three, the Bible says:

“Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, his brothers and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites, 4 and I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door. 5 Then I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites bowls full of wine, and cups; and I said to them, “Drink wine.” 6 But they said, “We will drink no wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall drink no wine, you nor your sons, forever.

Now let's take a pause a bit. The reason why they will not drink wine is very, very simple from those verses that we read. You see, it was an instruction that came through their founding father, that drinking of wine was forbidden and that became a culture in the house of Rechabites and that culture was passed down from generation to generation. So, an instruction came through their fathers, that became their culture that says “no to drinking of wine.”

Now if you read from verse seven, it says:

You shall not build a house, sow seed, plant a vineyard, nor have any of these; but all your days you shall dwell in tents, that you may live many days in the land where you are sojourners.’ 8 Thus we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, or our daughters, 9 nor to build ourselves houses to dwell in; nor do we have vineyard, field, or seed. 10 But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

Now, anyone who came into the house of Rechabites is coming to simply meet a culture of no to wine drinking. Now, if you don't have a culture put in place in your organization, this is where we are going to apply it. If you as the leader don't have a culture put in place in your organization, every new comer will come into an environment where anything and everything is permissible, and this will not go well with the organization. You see, every organization must have in place a culture that points people to what they actually stand for, what the organization stands for, whether it is respect, whether it is honor, whether it is excellence, whether it is timeliness, or accountability, and the list can go on.

If any organization will be preserved, then such organization must have in place a robust organizational culture. Now if we jump to verse 18-19, of the same chapter of Jeremiah, chapter 35, the Bible says: “And Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts and done according to all that he commanded you, 19 therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not lack a man to stand before Me forever.” ’ ”

Now, the reason why Jonadab would not like a man to stand before God forever is simply because of the culture that he had put in place and everyone after him are religiously following the same culture, not turning to the left or to the right. Now, what does this have to do with us as leaders? You see, the very first cardinal point in any effective organizational leadership is simply having in place or putting in place a robust organizational culture.

Now, let me show us the second one. The second one is organizational structure. This has to do with the system that depicts organizational hierarchy, task and responsibilities of everyone within the organization and how the organization operates in order to meet the vision, goals and aspirations that are being laid out. This is what organizational structure helps leaders to achieve. It has to do with the organizational hierarchy, the task and responsibilities of everyone within the organization, and how the organization operates in order to meet the visions, goals and aspirations that have been laid out.

You see, without a proper organizational structure, the visions, the goals and aspirations of the organization would be almost impossible, if not totally impossible to achieve. Now, let me show us a simple verse of the Scripture in Luke chapter 10:1. This verse is going to help us to understand what it means to have a structure in place in our organizations. The Bible says: After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. Now this was a case study of Jesus, the Bible says, Jesus appointed 70 people, and send them out two by two into every city and place where he Himself was about to go.

Now, Jesus could have sent the whole 70 out at once, or send them out 10 by 10, or send them out five by five, but Jesus chose to send them out two by two. Now, there are some fundamental lessons we must learn in this place as leaders when it comes to organizational structure from this particular Luke 10:2. I want to show us three lessons that we must learn from that place, that is going to help us in putting a robust organizational structure in place.

Number one: the less complex the structure, the less complex it will be for the leader to provide leadership. The more complex the structure, the more complex it will be to provide leadership. You see, it will be easier to lead and supervise two people at once than it will be to supervise 70 people at a goal. So, Jesus sent them out two by two, simply for easy supervision, and leadership. And so, we can see the structure of Jesus that it is not complex, it is simple, so that He can be able to supervise the activities of His followers.

Number two lesson we will learn is that it will be easier to spot a weak link within the organization, when there is a proper structure put in place than when there is no structure, and everyone appears to be busy and effective. As a leader, you can easily detect who is weak or strong between two people than among 70 people. That's the second lesson I want us to get as leaders.

And the third one is: reportage and accountability becomes more easier in an organization with structure than one without a structure. If you look at verse 17 of that same Luke 10, the Bible says, then the seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name. So organizational structure is very key when it comes to effective organizational leadership. Now, let me end this section by simply sharing with us a story. Now the title of the story is: Whose Job Is It? This story is going to help us to understand what it means to have an organization structure in place.

Now, this is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important task to be done and everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it. But Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it. So, it ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody, when Nobody did what Anybody could have done. Now, that is the end of the story.

There is a lesson I want to show us. You see, the reason why this story ended the way it ended is simply because there is no organizational structure in place. That's exactly what it is telling us. Everybody would assume somebody would do anybody or nobody's work if the organization is lacking in effective structure. But the moment there is a structure in place, everyone is updated about the role they are to play in realizing the organization's goals, visions, aspiration, so that the organization can run smoothly and effectively. So, in conclusion, if you're going to experience a hitch-free organizational leadership, these two cardinal points must be adequately given the needed attention.

Your organization must have a culture most especially that showcases performance, that showcases productivity and excellence. Your organization also must have a structure. Don't run it anyhow. Put structure in place as leaders, that gives rooms for efficiency, and that gives room for growth. This is where we are going to draw the curtains on today’s episode of Leaderview, I believe you've learned something. Please, don't forget to share this article with people within your leadership circle, share it with your friends, so that they can get to also benefit from what we have shared with ourselves in this piece.

Word of Confession: (Optional)

Lord Jesus, I confess to you that I have sinned against the LORD God - in the rebellion of my heart, I have disappointed your expectations on my life. I have fallen from Your grace and followed wrong influences around me. Today, I retrace my steps back to you - and I ask that in your mercy you accept me as your son and give to me (again) the promise of the Father - the Holy Spirit. Lord Jesus, please, come and make my heart your home, and from there rule in the affairs of all men. In Jesus Name I have prayed.
