One of the many ways through which leaders can become effective in their assignment is simply by refocusing. There are certain leadership challenges or opposition that a leader would not be able to overcome except he or she refocuses. Today’s world of leadership is so competitive and vision-driven to the point that it takes a leader who constantly refocuses to stay afloat.

 

Now, at some point in Jesus’ leadership, He led twelve men. These men began following Him everywhere He went, and they were observing everything that He was doing. But a time came that they began to lose focus and was constantly arguing about who should be the leader among themselves. But this is how Jesus was able to quench that argument and got them refocused. In Matthew 20:20-28, the Bible says:

 

“Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him. ²¹ And He said to her, “What do you wish?” She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.” ²² But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They said to Him, “We are able.” ²³ So He said to them, “You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.” ²⁴ And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers. ²⁵ But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. ²⁶ Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. ²⁷ And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— ²⁸ just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

 

Refocusing leadership would be almost impossible, if not totally impossible, if the leader is not refocusing the followers or the team. Many times, the task of leadership become so tedious when the leader is finding it hard to get his team to be focused. A leader cannot do everything, he or she needs the right team to be able to accomplish his vision and goals. Once the team are nowhere to be found in the place of focus, the leader is frustrated. So, refocusing the team is an integral part of refocusing leadership.

 

Refocusing leadership also sometimes requires that the leader himself or herself consider other ways or options of doing things. Many leaders are so narrow-minded and monotonous in their approach to solving leadership challenges. If there is any group of people on earth who should be broad-minded, this group should be leaders. A leader can refocus simply by refocusing his or her vision, refocusing the goal and objectives of the assignment or the organization, look straight into the future and actively engaging that future. These and many more are ways through which the leader himself or herself can refocus.

 

So, refocusing leadership for greater effectiveness requires that the leader refocuses his team or followers, and also, the leader must refocus his or vision. The leader must also be broad-minded and not shallow in his or her thinking. When these are done, then the leadership would experience greater effectiveness.
