There is an education that comes with knowing and understanding the Word of God. The education of the Word brings us to a place where we can relate with God based on His Word. When a mind is educated, such a mind becomes fully armed with the requisite knowledge to surmount every life's challenges. But when a mind is fully educated with the Word of God, such a mind is not only armed to surmount life's challenges alone but is also able to fulfill the will of God.
The education of the Word begins with one's deliberateness in seeking the Word. In Ezra 7:10, the Bible says: "For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in Israel." When you carefully examine what you just read in Ezra 7:10, you will notice it describes a full circle of what an excellent education ought to be. To be educated in the Word, you have to be like Ezra who prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord. This is usually the starting point. The education of the Word begins with seeking the law of the Lord.
The level of education that we possess right now is a product of our seeking. Western education doesn't fall on anyone just like that; it is a product of seeking. And the more you seek, the more you know. Being educated in the Word will also require that you seek the law of the Lord. The commands, teachings, and words of God that take precedence over human language are known as the law of the Lord. In the context of the gospel, "law" refers to the rules, decrees, and precepts of salvation that the Lord has made known to humanity.
This is what David had to say about the Law of the Lord. In Psalm 19:7-9, it says:
The law of the Lord is perfect, [e]converting the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;
9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
In Isaiah 34:16, the Scripture says: “Search from the book of the Lord and read: Not one of these shall fail; not one shall lack her mate. For My mouth has commanded it, and His Spirit has gathered them.” Searching the book of the Lord launches us into the education of the Word. For a Christian, ignorance of the Word isn't an excuse because everything that you require for life and godliness has been put in the Word of God. Your relevance in life is embedded in your level of education in the Word. The Bible is God's Word, and it is the revelation of who He Is.
When the Jews in Berea heard the Word of God from the mouth of the Apostle Paul and Silas, they received the message with great enthusiasm. But much more than receiving from their mouths, they examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. And consequently, many of them believed as a result of what they heard and what they searched out (Acts 17:11). Hearing the Word of God is one thing, and studying it for your education is another thing. At the end of the day, the Bible documented that the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica. Why? Because they took their education in the Word more seriously! The Word of God shaped their character and conduct.
For you to experience the Word of God work for you firsthand, you have to be educated by it. Studying and internalizing the teachings of the Word of God can have profound effects on a person's mind and well-being. Let me show us (with relevant Scriptures), five ways in which the education of the Word of God can impact a person's mind:
1. Increased Peace and Comfort
Understanding and embracing the teachings of the Word of God can bring a sense of peace and comfort to the mind, especially during times of difficulty or uncertainty. Philippians 4:7 says: “and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
2. Enhanced Moral Compass
The teachings found in the Word of God can help individuals develop a strong moral compass, guiding their thoughts and actions toward what is considered right and just. Proverbs 4:20-21 NIV says: “My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. For they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.” David said in Psalm 119:9-11:
How can a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed according to Your word.
10 With my whole heart I have sought You;
Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.
3. Improved Resilience
Learning and applying the Word of God can help build resilience in the mind, providing a source of strength and hope during life's challenges. James 1:12 TPT says: “If your faith remains strong, even while surrounded by life’s difficulties, you will continue to experience the untold blessings of God! True happiness comes as you pass the test with faith and receive the victorious crown of life promised to every lover of God!”
4. Heightened Spirituality
Engaging with the Word of God can deepen one's spiritual connection and foster a sense of purpose and meaning, leading to a more fulfilled and enriched mental state. Ephesians 5:17 says: “Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” The education of the word brings us to a place of heightened spiritual sensitivity.
5. Increased Empathy and Compassion
The education of the Word of God often emphasizes values such as love, kindness, and compassion, which can lead to a more empathetic and caring mindset toward others. In Matthew 13:14, the Bible says: “And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.”
These are just a few ways in which the education of the Word of God can positively impact the mind, fostering personal growth, spiritual development, and emotional well-being. Never let your mind stray from the Word of God. Let your heart and mind be guarded by it, and your flourishing will appear to all.
