Today, we will be discussing and treating one of the greatest life’s issues that human beings face on the face of the earth, and it is Fear. Many times when we want to do something, we want to engage in something meaningful and purposeful, we encounter fear. And what is fear? Fear is a limiting experience that prevents a man or a woman from achieving something he or she has proposed to do.

And what is that thing that arises? Fear brings about doubt. It brings about double mindedness. You start to second guess. You are no longer sure about what you want to do, you are no longer sure about why you want to do what you want to do. You are no longer certain and confident on the how of what you want to do. And what fear does, it leads to procrastination. It leads to you stopping completely what you want to do. It leads to you not being able to progress and forge ahead in your assignment or life’s purpose.

 

And this morning, we just want to treat fear and there is a Scripture that God has given to us that helps us to treat fear. And that Scripture is 2 Timothy chapter 1 verse 7 and it says “For God has not given us a spirit of fear.” That means a spirit of fear actually exists but the Bible is saying to us that God has not given us a spirit of fear. But what spirit has God given us? “He has given us a spirit of love, of power and of a sound mind.” Do you see that? God has not given us a spirit of fear.

 

When you talk about a spirit of something, that means it is a spirit that carries that thing. So, there is a spirit that transports fear, there is a spirit that brings fear to you. The Bible makes us understand that God has not given us the spirit of fear.

 

When you talk about something spiritual, it’s something invisible, something you cannot see or touch but it exists. So, when you talk about a spirit that conveys or carries a thing, it talks about the kind of atmosphere, invisible atmosphere that you live in, the kind of atmosphere that you exist in. You know, I was discussing with my daughter yesterday and she was talking to me about what they taught them in school, about pleasant odours and unpleasant odours and it struck me because that’s just how simple it is to actually treat fear.

 

She said "mummy, when you want to let go of an unpleasant odour, what you just do simply is to introduce a pleasant odour or pleasant smell." And when she said it, it struck a chord in me, because when you spray a fragrance in the air, the odour is invisible just like fear, it is invisible and when you are going to spray an air freshener or a perfume, it’s also invisible but two of them are doing different things. One is bringing about an unpleasant odour, another one is bringing about a pleasant odour. When she said that, it struck a chord in me, that’s how we treat fear. The life treatment for fear is to introduce a counter or an opposite spirit. So, if the spirit of fear exists, then there’s also the spirit of faith.

 

And that’s why in this 2 Timothy 1:7, it said “For God has not given us a spirit of fear” It did not stop there, “But of power, of love and of a sound mind”. Those three encapsulates the Spirit of faith. So, for you to change the atmosphere you operate in, for you to change that fear atmosphere that you operate in, you need a new atmosphere. And guess what, on the earth, atmospheres are built by words. In the kingdom of God, same thing on the earth, atmospheres are built by words. It could come in form of the words that you hear, it could come in form of the music that you listen to. Atmospheres are built by words. So, if you are operating in the Spirit of fear right now, it means that an atmosphere has been built over time by words that you allow to come into yourself, into your circle, into your home, into your life that have built fear in you.

 

So, how do you treat this fear? Replace the words. Replace the words that you hear, change them from the words that bring about discouragements, doubts. Change them to words that bring about faith, change them to words that give you power to push on, that builds love in you and is able to give you a sound mind. That is what faith does. For you to eliminate fear, you have to introduce faith, and how does faith come? Faith comes by hearing and hearing, the word of God. You have to replace the words of your colleagues that are discouraging, the words of your family members that is discouraging, the words of the T.V that is discouraging and replace it with the word of God that brings about faith. That’s how you treat fear!

 

So, if you have fear over your finances, you need the word of God to enter into your system that will build faith up in you. If you have fear about your marriage, you have fear about tomorrow; how do you treat that fear? You make sure you get into your system the word of God that will give you power, that will put love in you, and will give you a sound mind.

 

I believe that there is nothing you are going through right now that is not built upon an atmosphere. There are different atmospheres, the kind of music that you listen to can also build an atmosphere of fear. If you are not careful, you will go into a mood of fear. But there are certain music that you will listen to that will build your faith, that will build power, that will give you a sound mind, and will put love into you.

 

So, that’s what I want to discuss with you this day that you need to treat the fear in your life. Don’t continue to live and exist in the atmosphere of fear. Introduce faith. Let the word of God bring about a new fragrance into your atmosphere. Let it bring about a new aroma, a new smell, let the smell of faith via the word of God radiate your being and you will see a tremendous difference in your life.
