Insights into Hireling Discipleship

Listen To Podcast: Hireling Discipleship

We want to look at something that I believe is important for us, is applicable with our lives. I am sure many of us would have seen this matter before in the bible but now we want to look at it a little bit so that we can start asking questions about ourselves and the people around us. So, we want to consider ‘Hireling Discipleship’. Is it existing on the earth? Is it possible? Is it good? Is it bad? Or is there anything that God will like us to learn about Hireling Discipleship? I want us to start our meditation together from the book of John chapter 10, we will read from verse 1 to 18. But I will start from verse 1 to verse 6. See what the Bible says:

“Most assuredly, This is Jesus speaking here, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. Verse 2, But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.”

Now, if we pause here, we know that Jesus was speaking and He made us to understand certain key words. The first word is sheepfold. We can see door. We can see shepherd, we can see sheep. He now said, as it concerns the sheep, the sheepfold, the shepherd, and the door, this is the normal reality. When a shepherd wants to interact with the sheep, the shepherd does not jump through the window, the shepherd does not look for all manner of dubious means to assess the sheep, the shepherd finds the door, the shepherd enters the place, calls the sheep by their name, and the Bible says, He will lead them out. Look at it again in verse 3, the latter part of it, it says, “And the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out”.

Verse 4, “And when he brings out his own sheep.” Look at it, when he brings out his own sheep, not the sheep of his friend or his neighbor. “When he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him”. You know, we are looking at hireling discipleship. And we must never forget when we are hearing discipleship, there is usually something that has to do with following something or following somebody. You don't do discipleship without following. In fact, I do, and you don’t look at what I am doing, we are not in discipleship.  For instance, we have realized that discipleship is not restricted to the church. Discipleship takes place across the world on a daily basis. In fact, the people of the world don’t like using discipleship, they use words like, mentorship. But they also have other words that they use; they can also use the word, apprenticeship. They can give us the impression, that okay, this is it- we have a company and then, we are looking for engineers. You have been trained as an engineer but you are not yet good, but you want to become an engineer, come and join our engineering company, come and understudy certain people among us. And as you see them do the engineering, you are expected to copy them and become like them.

So, even though it is prepared as if it is about job; looking for work, it is discipleship, please. Because in the long run when you are done going through the apprenticeship, the process or sometimes they also call it, internship. When you are done going through the process, you will not become an engineer in a company “A”, behaving as if you are an engineer in a company ‘B’.  So, the philosophy of the company, the ideology of the company, the culture of the company, they would have taken time to incorporate it into to you. So, you will begin to talk like the company people talk, you begin to behave like they behave, and you begin to handle things the way they do.

So, what has happened simply is that discipleship has taken place. Brother A, or Sister A has been brought into the company. It doesn’t matter the background of the brother or the sister. The brother is made to follow somebody in the company who will become a model for the brother or the sister. And the brother will be expected to replicate after the order of the model. So, they expect you, as you see that man do, you do. As you hear him speak, you speak. The way he conducts, assuming it is a marketing company, the way he sells the product, they will expect you to do the same, why? You have been discipled. And who is your discipler? That man, that woman that they made you to copy, to follow.

So, discipleship is not restricted to the church. It’s a potent strategy for replicating productivity or performance. If I can do something, and I asked you to copy me, then what I am trying to say is, whatever I do, should be the least that you should do. You know, there is a place in the scripture, I think in Isaiah, the Bible was speaking about the way of holiness. It says, that way, even if somebody that does not know the way, assuming the person walks on that way, the person will not miss the way.

Assuming this pulpit, we can see the width of this pulpit; it starts from here and stops here. Assuming it is goes from here to the end of this hall, and then, there is also a wire that leads to the end of the hall; two ropes touching the end of the wall. Assuming this pulpit is not here, or this size, and they said, Bro. Gboyega! I said, yes! They said, come to the end of the hall, follow the way that you are on. You know even if I am very foolish, it is easy for me to do it. Because once I move like this, wire will touch me, I come back. I move like this, the wire will touch me. So, the way it keeps me, and it can give people the impression that I know my way. Why? They see me progressing. What is happening? I am only following the way.

So, discipleship is a means that has been created, instituted by God, adopted by even the people of the world, to make even a fool to do a good job. If you are able to disciple me very well, let’s say 6 months, and my head is correct, and I am watching you very well. And you disciple me on how to be, not the best nurse but an average nurse; like, I don’t want to bring you to my level, I just want you to be a level above other people. You know, if I see you doing the nursing work for 6 months, people should assume I’m a nurse. What is happening? I have copied you, I have watched you. So, even if it is a fashion business, and I want people to assume I am a world class fashion designer, all I need to do is to just follow another fashion designer. So, as she is doing the work, I am watching her. As she is buying the materials in the market, I am watching her, what is happening? I am being discipled.

Jesus said, when a disciple is perfect, right? He will become just like his master. It is like, where a disciple must be is to be at the level of the master. So, that means discipleship is a means that has been instituted to bring anybody to a higher level. So, it doesn’t matter where you have been, you can be a different person if you can identify the right discipleship and submit yourself to the process. Who is that man, who is that woman, where is that system that I can submit myself in, follow the way they do their things, I will surely get to the end that all have get to. So, that is discipleship.

Discipleship is not just what we are looking at today. We are looking at hireling discipleship. Discipleship on its own looks harmless, it looks good. In fact, it looks neither good nor bad, depending on how you use it.  Discipleship looks like a tool that can both do good or do evil. Today, we talk about kidnapping, terrorism in Nigeria, every kidnapper is a disciple of another. Nobody is born a kidnapper in that context. You need to learn the rope.

Do you also know that there are disciples in Yahoo, Yahoo business; internet fraud. There are people that finished university only to become interns in Yahoo, Yahoo enterprises. It doesn’t matter what they’ve taught them in the university, these ones will change them; they will unlearn, relearn so that they can become experts. So, basically, whatever profession you choose to do in life, whatever you want God to use you for also, you must identify the right discipleship that will get you there.

So, the question is, can hireling discipleship get anybody anywhere? That’s the question. And if it can get anybody anywhere, what is even that hireling discipleship? How is it like? So, let’s together look at that John chapter 10 again. And that was the focus of what Jesus was dealing with. The title of that scripture in my Bible is “Jesus the True shepherd”. Now let’s look at it again, I will read from verse 1, and then we will continue to verse 18.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

I just imagined a man calling his sheep by name, and maybe the sheep’s name is Johnson. “Hello, Johnson, come here, let’s go, let’s go out, let me go and show you how we do things.” Imagine Jesus also calling the disciples out, “Peter, James, John, let’s go”. And he was taking them, “Let me show another dimension of spirituality”. And He took them to the mountain, the mountain is now called, the mount of transfiguration.

So, a discipler will usually call out a disciple or disciples for a journey, for an experience. There is a scripture that people that are in prophetic ministry love so much, in the book of Ezekiel, when prophet Ezekiel had an experience where certain distances were measured for him. There were times when things like ankle level, a 1000 cubits was measured for him. And following that measurement, it is like a man saying, Ma, come forward. Come forward to where? Come forward to there. Okay! That is a thousand cubits. And on moving forward, the man realizes that the water that he is walking in has risen to his ankle. The man said, come forward again. By how much? By a 1000 cubits! And on moving forward, the water has gotten to his knee. The man said, come forward again, and on coming forward, the water gets his waist. I don’t know how many of us can walk easily inside a river, not swimming pool, river that can come to our waist. Don’t forget it will come with force. So, it is becoming unbearable for him to walk. He said it is such that he needs to swim inside. And it is also difficult to swim against the direction of the river. You want to find out where is the river following, let me swim along with the river. Then you spend less energy.

So, that angel that was measuring a 1000 cubits is like a discipler that shows you, this is another dimension that you can do, this is another possibility ahead of you, come! And if only you can follow, and you can come, there is supposed to be an experience in your life. Something you’ve never seen before about your life; a growth taking place, a maturity taking place. I thought I couldn’t handle this kind of pressure, but how comes I am handling it? Somebody measured a 1000 cubits for you, you decided not to stay indoors, you followed. Because something is clear here, the shepherd will call the sheep by name, and then they will come out and follow him.

Let’s go on. The Bible says, Verse 5, Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” Let’s jump to verse 7,Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Let’s do two dichotomies here; the good shepherd, let’s not call the second one, the bad shepherd. Let’s call the second, the thief, because another word for the bad shepherd is, a thief. Let us be very practical. What is the responsibility of a good shepherd? To take care of the sheep! What is the opposite of me taking care of you? If I don’t give you money, what is the opposite of me not giving you money, is it not me collecting money from you? You know there are two things that can happen of course, if I don’t give you money, I can leave you the way you are. Maybe before you had N200, and then, if I give you N200, you have 400. But I can choose not to give you N200, that doesn’t make me bad. That means you just remain in your N200. Problem arises if I then collect your own N200, what do you have left? Am I a good shepherd? A shepherd should take care of the sheep. But when you are not a good shepherd, that is, you are a bad shepherd, then you have the sheep to take care of you.

A shepherd should watch over the sheep, but if you are a bad shepherd, then the sheep will watch over the shepherd. I remember, at a point, I decided to work in a bakery, after secondary school, before JAMB result came, “so let me hustle, raise some money. We don’t know in university, I might need to buy this and that. And then I ask at home, they are like, let’s wait for salary. Let me have something.” So, one thing I noticed is that, although, the job I applied for was to be a sales rep. I later realized as a sales rep, I have to be coming in the night to load the bread that the other sales rep will sell in the morning. And we were alternating it. So, in my week of day, he will come in the night to load bread, and in his own week of day, I will come in the night. You know, we were just changing it like that, but there was a problem. Bakers were stealing the bread that were loaded in the vehicles, not in the bakery. So, as he loads the bread, they will record everything, then I carry the bread to sell, and my money is not enough.

So, I spent some months there. The last month was the only month I collected full salary. They were always removing. The remaining bread, they will remove the money, almost every day. Like my salary then was N4,500, and I was collecting N2,000. Imagine working very hard, carrying very heavy wood of bread every night, and then, they still give you, N2,000, N2,500, it was not more than that.

So, what now happened? When I was doing night, because I had this natural policing tendency, and then they were now hurting my own salary, so I became very effective. So, I realized the supervisor, whether he was part of them or not, I don’t know. He was more comfortable, they were paying him well. Maybe he was collecting like 40,000 that time, I don’t know, when I was collecting N4500, you see the difference. But instead of him to be awake at the night, he was sleeping. So, these bakers monitored him, they knew the time he sleeps. In fact, they were storing the bread behind his own office, outside. So, they will pass him, throw the bread outside the window. And when they are done, they walk away, like they are done oh! Good night Sir! Bye Bye! By 4am, 5am. Bye bye, Oga, bye bye! And he will say, bye bye, and that is when he wakes up, bye, bye! And that’s how they carry loads of bread.

Look at it, we are looking at a situation where the supervisor was supposed to supervise so that me, I can even do my job, and collect my salary. But because he was not supervising, he was sleeping on duty, so what happens? I was now hurt. If they say, pray for your supervisor, bless your supervisor, wish your supervisor well, will I wish him well, when I know, anytime I come, he is snoring when I am passing?

So, eventually, the good news is that, with the work that myself and that guy did, they sacked almost 4 or 5 bakers, because I left to go to university but those ones left to be sacked. Look at that, the supervisor is the shepherd. Myself and other bakers, we were the sheep. Instead of him to do his work, he was sleeping. Please, should that man be the owner of the business, do you think he will sleep? And when he is aware they steal bread every night, will he sleep if he is the owner of the bread, bakery? You know, they were not only stealing bread, they were stealing flour, stealing vegetable oil, stealing salt, stealing sugar every night. How can the business prosper? So, I became very angry.

So, when we were looking at the thief does not come. So, when you hear, the thief, just tell yourself, the bad shepherd, the bad leader, the bad mentor, in fact, the bad husband, the bad father. Don’t just think the thief, of course, the first thing is about the devil. But it is about what the devil is supposed to do in that context, a bad shepherd.

So, the bad father does not come, the bad husband does not come, the bad leader, the bad pastor does not come except to steal, to kill, and to destroy. Are we sincerely saying, we don’t see these things happening in our society? Do you think all the bad things that we see that are done, are done by the people that we think are bad only? There are people we don’t even know whether they are bad or not but where they are, they are running wherever they are as if they are bad people; with bad systems, with bad attitudes, bad psychology, bad methods.

That man I was talking about, he wasn’t looking bad but he was doing a bad thing. If you see the kind of ovens they have in that bakery; it was not a small bakery. If I mention the name, anybody that has been to that place before, will know the area. Multi-million naira, then, when naira was very good or better. Multi-million naira oven, each one, and then, they had like four oven. The owner cannot come in the night, and then hug him where he is sleeping, and he knows he sleeps every night. So, the man is not a bad man, but he was doing a bad thing. So, when we say a bad father, it is not because God created the man bad, it is because the man is being a bad father, the man is being a bad mentor, a bad teacher.

For instance, I am standing before us now, it is not as if, if I do bad things now, now, it is not because God created me bad, I am doing a bad thing. So, the question is, when you happen to be in a situation that your life and destiny is at the mercy of a man or a woman who is doing a bad thing, or doing something in a bad way, the question is, can you then become a good person? Can your life end up good? Can your ministry end up being good? Can your marriage end up being good? Can your children grow up in the future to become good children of the bad parents? That is why we are looking at hireling discipleship.

But Jesus made a clear distinction, He said, He had come that the people may have life, and have it more abundantly. That looks to me like the example of a good mentor, a good teacher, a good mother, a good father, that whatever I do, I will do it in a manner that gives people abundant life. Let them have joy in their hearts.

You produce a product, Sir, and then you say in your mind, “I want people to wear this thing and say God bless this man, God bless this woman that did this work. You know people can pay you and still bless you. And you can gift people some things and they will still curse you. In the mind, you are like, “who asked him for this thing, this thing is not a blessing to me”

So, let’s continue from verse 11, I am the good shepherd. And this thing must be resonating with us, as God has ordained it. God didn’t ordain us for anything less than good. Our own may not be shepherd, it may be anything else, it must be good. Jesus said, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. Hireling is brought up now. 12 But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, he sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. 13 The hireling flees because what? He is a hireling.

I remember that story we shared about maybe an elephant that carried a scorpion or a snake or something. I think scorpion. That one stings because it is a scorpion. A thief will steal because he is a thief. A robber will rob because he is a robber. People basically do who they are. Somebody who is rubbish will speak rubbish. A wise man cannot speak foolish words. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. It is ultimately who you are that you speak, or that you do. If you are excellent inside, you can’t do a mediocre job outside.  If you are so patient and loving inside, you cannot be so impatient and hateful outside.

13 The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and I am known by My own. 15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. 17 “Therefore My Father loves Me, Look at why the Father loves Jesus, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment I have received from My Father.”

I want to ask us, Jesus said, the hireling runs away because he is a hireling. In fact, the bible says, Jesus was speaking again, He said, the hireling is not the shepherd, “He who is not the shepherd.” The bible did not say, the hireling is not “a” shepherd, and I want us to be meditating, those of us that have done the English of “the” and “a”. There is a difference between ‘the man,’ and ‘a man’.

“A man” can be anyone. “The man” is the particular man. A school can have 50 students, and we say, can a student come out? If the principal says, can the student we spoke about earlier come out? Everybody knows it is that particular student. There is only one ‘the,’ but there can be a billion ‘a’.

Jesus said, the hireling is not the shepherd. It means there is the right shepherd. The reason why we are looking at it is, somebody could have wondered, if he is not the shepherd, why was he now running? Number one! Why was he even there in the first place? He is not the shepherd, why was he with the sheep? Why is it that when the wolf came, he had to run away and the sheep were exposed to the wolf if he was not a shepherd? So, Jesus didn’t say, he was not a shepherd, he was a shepherd just like somebody could be a father, somebody could be a teacher, somebody can be a governor.

We’ve never had a situation in Nigeria where a politician who is not a public office holder embezzles money. Our problem is not that an outsider steals our money, our problem is that somebody that is a politician, a president, a counselor, a house of rep member, a judicial officer steals money. Does it mean that there are no good politicians or good other people? There are! But among them, some decide to be corrupt. What I am trying to say is that, you cannot steal in the politics if you are not one of them. A farmer that is in the bush cannot know when they are sharing the money. It is one of them.

So, there is a difference between you are “a” one of them, or you are “the” one. What kind of attitude do we also have? Do you want to become “a” pastor, or “the” pastor? Do you want to become “a” pastor’s wife or you want to be “the” pastor’s wife? The Bible says, if any man desires the office of a bishop, he desires a good work. Do you want to become “a” prophet or do you want to become “the” prophet? Do you want to become “an” author, or do you want to become “the” author? Please, anything that we can think about, there is “the”, there is “a”. If you are “a”, you are one of them. If you are “the,” you are leading among them, you are showing them the right example because we are now in a world of either “a” shepherd or “the” shepherd. A million people can be using a product but the product is produced by one company. The fact that you are a shepherd does not mean another person cannot become a shepherd. All of us can become “a” shepherd. But if any one of us is very good in the work of being a shepherd, so the person has moved away from being “a” shepherd to become “the” shepherd. Do you want to become “a” teacher or do you want to become “the” teacher?

So, there could be hundred people doing the same thing you are doing, there could be hundred people doing it! They could say, I am looking for who can do it. There is ‘a…” No! That should not be your testimony. They should say, no! There is “the..” When they say, any other person is a counterfeit. This is the person that can do this job oh! They won’t say, this is “a person.” If they are looking at excellence, they won’t say, there is a man that can do it. They will say, there is the man there. He knows the job.

So, Hireling is also a professional. Because if you looking at the word, “hireling,” it is a combination of two words: “hire” and “ling.” When you hire a man to do a job, that man is a hireling in that job. He is doing the job, but he is doing it simply because you have hired him. He has no heart for the job. If you will become “the” in that your profession, in that your calling, it is because you are not just doing it for money, you are doing it because you have passion for it.

For instance, imagine they say, we need somebody that will stand before us, and in 5 minutes will make all of us to laugh, and we must laugh for 5 minutes. And you say, I can do it, and then you come to do it. And then while you are doing it, some people were frowning at you, and you are like saying, why are you people frowning, how much are you even paying me? And you vex out of the place in two minutes. And they said you have to do it for 5 minutes to collect the money. Number one, you won’t even end up collecting the money, why? You got angry.

But imagine that you just love to make people laugh, they pay you, they don’t pay you. In fact, as you are looking alone, people are laughing. When you keep quiet, they are laughing. When you are talking, they are laughing. You won’t know when the 5 minutes is done, no matter how they are. Somebody is frowning at you, you say something, and everybody will burst into laughter, you will collect the money.

So, the same condition can be before two, three people. Somebody will be discouraged in that difficult situation, somebody is encouraged. The difference is that somebody is doing it for the benefits, maybe the money, the popularity, the “me too, I am doing it.” Another person is doing it because “I love this thing. I love it.” You know, Dr. Myles Munroe was talking some time ago, that they can sack you from your job, but they cannot sack you from your work”. In another way, your job is the thing you are doing so that you will be paid or rewarded at the end of the day. Your work is something you are doing because that’s who you are.

I don’t know how many of us can look at a fish that is swimming and you are like, “oh, this fish, you are swimming so well, “oya” collect 1000.” Do we do that? You will rather eat it. Is that not it? Have you ever rewarded bird for flying before? They fly so high. We don’t even say well done. When we are doing the things, we are created to do, even though nobody tells us well done, we continue, the same thing for the fishes, the other animals.

I don’t know how many times we’ve greeted and appreciated all the dogs in our communities for barking. They bark whether we say thank you or not. And they do it, free. If they eat, good! If they don’t eat, they will even bark in hunger. They will bark when they are full, they bark every time. That’s what they are wired to do. It doesn’t matter whether people complain about how they are doing it, I don’t know how many times people complain on the street, “that dog is barking too much, you have to keep your mouth quiet.” And the dog is like, “everybody in the community is complaining about the way I am barking, today I will not bark.” Has it ever happened before? No!

Just remembered those times when we were waking up in the morning, whether in the village or in other places, and then you hear the cock crow, have they ever stopped shouting? Even when a chicken dies, the new chicken will do it. They don’t need you to say thank you. They use it to wake you up in the morning, you say thank you, you don’t say thank you, they will still wake you up tomorrow morning. They fulfill their purpose whether you appreciate them or not. They are not paid to do it. If you pay them, they will say thank you. If you pour corn to the chicken that you are not the owner but you just love the way they do their sounds, they will say thank you in their minds. But they will do it even though you don’t pour corn. They will say, if don’t pour corn, they will find one ant on the ground, one something that is crawling. God will feed them.

Imagine a man that has that attitude. Whether you pay me or you don’t pay me, God will feed me. I will do my job. This thing that God has given me to do, I will do it because this is my life. When I do it, I’m happy. Can a hireling say when he is leading the people, he is happy? For instance, I did a research and realized that somebody that has been working for me for years, what he told me. I asked him, this work that you are doing, is it that you really love it or because of money. And he said, “oga, na the money oh!” (it’s because of the money).

And this is the thing he has been doing since I got to Bwari. If you find him doing it, you will think he will rather die than not do it. I was shocked when he said “oga, na money oh!” Of course, he is getting paid, but the way he said it, I am like, if he now sees money, will he stop it? If he will stop it, he doesn’t have passion for it. I am not saying he is wrong, I am just saying, if he will stop, let me just be practical, if you will stop anything you are doing if you have enough money. Then you don’t have passion for it.

And this is how we will find our passion, ask yourself, if I have all the money in this world, will I still do this thing? Let me give us an instance now, if I have all the money in this world, I still talk the way I am talking. It’s just that now, I will do advert with money so that more people will come. That’s all. I will still talk. But how many of us can continue what we are doing? For some of us, it’s not our fault, we are not there yet, we have not started doing what we really love. And it’s not because we are sinners or we are wrong, no! its not just there yet. So, it’s normal for us to have money and do the thing we really love.

But some people, they are already having money now but they still don’t know whether they should do the thing they really love or they don’t really love. So, let’s get home and do the practical. I have done it before and I normally do it. Sometimes I will even do it with my wife, I will say, “my wife, imagine that we have so, so, so money, what do you think will do with it?” And when we ask those questions, we normally write down oh. Some things we have written for more than ten years now. We will be specific, that money is not small, if we can get it, what will we do? So, we list.

In fact, the first time I noticed I did it in my marriage, I was trying to understand the motive of my wife. And I was so disappointed in my expectation because what I didn’t expect was what she chose but really, that was the good thing. I was like, that’s good. I thought if she has the money, she will say, “we will travel, we will go to this place, to that place.” That’s what I was expecting her to say. It is this same work she wants to use the money for but she wants to make it big. So, I am like that’s good, even me, I began to trust her more.

Let’s do the experiment. If I have this particular money, 10 billion naira, what are we going to do as a family? Are we still going to continue doing this thing that we are doing? Are we going to make it bigger? Or we will say, let’s stop this thing, let’s go to the village. Let’s go and buy all the lands in the village. Let’s start farming. Or we will do what we are doing? Somebody can have that kind of money and he will close the church; ministry is over. You know, there is a proverb that says, maybe you are going to a place to meet something, and you meet it on the road, why are you going again? Just be going back. The reason why he is in the ministry is because of the money, he has seen money, no more ministry! No more fasting and prayer, to your tent oh Israel. But you now get that money, will you still continue in that ministry?

A Hireling discipleship, is not useful, it doesn’t do too much, it doesn’t transform. If the only reason why I am laughing is because you have paid me in the past to be laughing, you can’t trust what I am laughing; I can be laughing you into your death or into your trap. So, we cannot build our lives on hireling things, let’s look for something that is real. Are you a father? Be the good father, don’t be a hireling father. ‘I am being a father because somebody is paying me. Children! Your uncle sent money from abroad and because of that I am going to be nice to all of you in this week.” No! Let’s do our jobs and I pray that God will help us in Jesus’ name.

Word of Confession: (Optional)

Lord Jesus, I confess to you that I have sinned against the LORD God - in the rebellion of my heart, I have disappointed your expectations on my life. I have fallen from Your grace and followed wrong influences around me. Today, I retrace my steps back to you - and I ask that in your mercy you accept me as your son and give to me (again) the promise of the Father - the Holy Spirit. Lord Jesus, please, come and make my heart your home, and from there rule in the affairs of all men. In Jesus Name I have prayed.

The call of discipleship is a call to live a life beyond reading and searching the letters of the Scripture, to knowing and becoming one with whom the letters of Scripture testifies about.
